Too small for purpose – a typical London road near Heathrow – Liveblog

Harlington High Street is a narrow road with a single lane for each way of traffic. It is the secondary road that connects Heathrow Airport to most of north west London. Apart from a steady stream of car, van and other vehicle traffic the road also connects 3 bus routes.

One part of the road (near its end with Heathrow Airport) is particularily narrow because of on street parking spaces for residence. The result is an even further narrowing of the road to just a single lane for both sets of traffic. This is what happened in the space of just 30 minutes…

08:45 – a nice long cue to the end of the road where a set of traffic lights are causing lots of delays…if ever a roundabout was needed…

08:47 – lights finally changed but by the time people put their cars into gear to move it changes back to red…only about 7 vehicles got through…we got about 30-40 in the cue…

08:48 – cars coming from the other direction are stuck between the cue of traffic and parked cars blocking their lane forward.

08:50 – oh here come the big boys…why do buses always coming in a bunch?! going to be interesting now…(buses going away from Heathrow)

08:52 – buses are still waiting for somebody to let them go past..everyone just moves forward slowly and keeps blocking the route.

08:55 – good news for the buses! someone has stopped to let them through…this is going to be a long and slow move to get out…

08:56 – very slow…the bus is still trying to pull out without hitting anything…

08:57 – …very very slow…

09:00 – ok the buses have now moved on but the poor guy that let the buses out can’t get out…all the traffic that built up behind the buses are now pulling out and driving away quickly…blocking his way…at least everyone is saying ‘thanks’…

09:02 – this is hilarious – the cars are still pulling out, there is no traffic now from the ‘nice man’ car tot he trafffic lights and the lights are green but he is still waiting for the opposing traffic to stop coming…he is not smiling or acknowledging the thank yous anymore…

09:03 – he has started moving forward slowly to try and block the on coming cars – everyone behind him is looking angry…

09:05 – finally a break in the traffic coming at them…they race down to the red lights a 150 yards down the road.

09:06 – traffic is moving quickly because of the space created but the end of the traffic is not visible anymore…

09:10 – sort of good news for everyone, one of the residence is coming out to leave and take his car. This should create more space…

09:12 – eventually…at the moment he is causing more problems than he is solving…he has half pulled out but nowhere to go…blocking both sets of traffic…

09:14 – everyone is getting really annoyed at him now…he has pulled back into his parking space to let the traffic clear…

09:15 – (going to extend the liveblog to see when he actually pulls out) – no progress at the moment

09:18 – he has started his move again…lucky this time the cars have given him enough time to move on…

09:20 – he is out but this traffic is not going to finish anytime soon…there are two sets of buses now coming from both directions…best guess would be at least another 45 minutes to an hour of this to come until the morning rush is over…thanks for joining the live blog..
