HEATHROW THIRD RUNWAY – 6 MOST IMPORTANT PEOPLE AND GROUPS

Heathrow’s third runway debate will once again take centre stage now that the elections are over. The following people and groups have come out as the key players in the decade long saga:

Sir Howard Davies, Chairman of Airports Commission

The Airports Commission has been asked by the government to look into the best ways to tackle the rising demand for air travel. It reports directly to the Department of Transport. The findings are due this summer.

David Cameron, Prime Minister

In the 2010 election campaign David Cameron was strongly against a third runway at Heathrow, now he is in favour. He will lead the decision making on the issue after the Airports Commission reports.

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London and MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip

Popular politician and strongly against a new runway at Heathrow. He pushed the idea of Boris Island, as a new airport on the Thames but this was rubbished by most experts. On his election as MP for a bordering consitituency to Heathrow last week, he promised to do all he could to stop Heathrow expanding.

Known for their large and bold protests, the group has spoken out passionately against Heathrow’s expansion. One to watch as they may cause serious disruptions to any plans.

Hillingdon Council

Although the current map of Heathrow airport borders but is not within the limits of Hillingdon Council, the new runway will be. The Conversative controlled Council has spoken out against expansion and a partnership with Boris Johnson could cause serious difficulties for Heathrow including with planning permissions.
